Are you open to surprises?

I love surprises, but I know quite a few people that do not like surprises.  Admittedly, surprises aren’t always positive, but for me, the positive ones far outweigh the negative ones.

God has blessed me with both large and small blessings that could only have come from Him.  If I hadn’t been open to receiving them, would He have sent them or would I have recognized them?  I’m not sure.

As you know, it can be problematic to surprise someone – like for a milestone birthday.  One of my favorite surprises was for my 50th birthday, but I had to help my family out a bit.  I told them I wanted to be surprised, but that I didn’t want gifts or a lot of trouble.

I was living in Phoenix at the time, so I was expecting to be with them on my birthday and Thanksgiving.  They kept asking me if I was sure I didn’t want to know anything about my birthday.  I always said, “No.”  My only request was that we not go camping.  They dropped a few hints that led me to believe we might be going out of town.  For some reason, I thought that they were taking me to Sedona, which has breathtaking scenery.

On the morning of my birthday, they picked me up and headed to the airport.  I thought that was a little odd, but decided that someone from their family needed to be picked up for Thanksgiving.  Instead, they pulled up to the curb; opened the car door; handed me a plane ticket; hugged me and drove off.

I had a plane ticket to Kansas City.  When I arrived in Kansas City, about 30 members of my family (from all over the country) were there to greet me.  I was speechless!

What a fantastic surprise they had pulled off!

What might you be missing out on?
